min: an alternative win98 shell - v0.2.0
A downloadable shell
min is a tiny, minimalist, retro-flavored shell replacement for Windows 98's Explorer.exe. Meant to stay out of the way and give you more options than originally offered. I made this for my own use, but you may find it useful, too. Timed power options, coding tools like RNG stream, string sequencer & trimmer, TCP & serial connectors, sticky notes, and more to come. Feel free to let me know about any bugs you may find! Check out the included README.txt before use, for more details and installation instructions (simple!).
CHANGELOG:
- now including schemes.reg, which is a win98 appearance scheme that matches min's default colors and font (small fonts, size 7).
- added options in the text sequencer to remove spaces, line breaks, and missing glyphs
- mini explorer now saves your location when you close it
- shutdown and restart procedures are no longer standalone executables
- you can now have up to 4 sticky notes
- moved shortcuts #4 and #5 to the main menu
- now if sticky notes are set to show at startup, only the ones that contain text are shown
- added a cancel button to the mini explorer's "edit shortcuts" side panel
- un-hardcoded the calculator/paint/notepad shortcuts, should be more reliable
- removed the volume control until we get it right
- added the autosaving checklist feature
- added a custom run form that takes up way less room
- added batch renamer under coding utilities
- added a bunch of right-click options in mini explorer
- added a small "desktop list" window (also has a login setting), just in case you need your desktop items handy
- locked the shortcut textboxes on the mini explorer form, so they can't accidentally be edited while the form is "small"
- changed the task list refresh interval from 1 second to 5 seconds, to make it more manageable
- hid the disabled, coming-soon features from the menu system to conserve space
- fixed the drive box in the mini explorer so it works properly now
- all sticky notes now autosave properly
- added startup/login items, up to 3 for now
- added "y" and "n" shortcuts for the yes/no dialog boxes
